For three nights in late March, Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine will host the Night Cherry Blossom Pilgrimage, an event that invites visitors to witness breathtaking illuminated cherry blossoms against the backdrop of this historic shrine.

Founded in 1869, Yasukuni Shrine was established to honor those who sacrificed their lives in service to Japan. The shrine has long been a place of remembrance, deeply intertwined with the nation’s history. However, it has also been a source of controversy, as it enshrines individuals—including some convicted war criminals—whose commemoration has sparked debate both within Japan and internationally.

Despite this, the shrine remains a significant cultural and historical site. In spring, it transforms into one of Tokyo’s most scenic cherry blossom viewing spots, attracting visitors who come to admire the beauty of the blooms amidst its solemn atmosphere.

This special after-dark event was first introduced in 2023, and has quickly grown in popularity. Last year’s gathering saw a large turnout, as many were eager to experience the magical ambience that only a night-lit shrine can offer. During this period, the Shinmon gate (which is typically closed after dark) will be open from 6pm to 8pm, allowing guests to view the ethereal scenery.

The juxtaposition of softly illuminated petals and the shrine’s dignified presence creates an unforgettable experience, offering a rare chance to appreciate Yasukuni’s historic significance in a uniquely tranquil setting. Given that the event’s schedule may be subject to changes depending on the sakura blooming conditions, visitors are encouraged to check the Yasukuni Shrine official website for updates.
