The Nasu region of Tochigi Prefecture is the largest dairy producing area in Honshu, and there are numerous cheese factories in this part of the country. These factories have also put a focus on utilizing whey, the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained during the cheese-making process – it's a byproduct that is often discarded elsewhere.
The Cheese and Whey Festival aims to shine a light on both industries, and includes the chance for attendees to taste and compare cheeses from factories across the country, sample dishes made with cheese and whey from popular restaurants, and even take part in a ricotta cheese making experience.
Admission to the event is free, but bring yen if you plan on purchasing food.
Getting there
The festival takes place at the Good News Neighbors store in Nasu, which can be accessed in around 10 minutes by taxi from Takaku Station on the Tōhoku Main Line.
For those who opt to drive, on-site parking is available and is charged at 500 JPY.
