Opened in 1960, the Tanigawadake Ropeway in Gunma Prefecture climbs Mount Tanigawa to the Tenjindaira Ski Resort in Minakumi, Gunma. The top elevation is 1,319 meters high and the ropeway spans 2.3 kilometers. The line runs in all seasons and transports not only skiers to the resort but also hikers and tourists who want to enjoy the expansive landscape and vistas.
Each ropeway cabin, of which there are fourteen, can carry up to twenty-two passengers. A one-way ride takes only fifteen minutes and affords visitors a beautiful view of the forested folds of Mount Tanigawa. From Doaiguchi Ropeway Station to Tenjindaira Station, riders can enjoy a sense of flying through the open air.
Visit during any of the four seasons for a radically different experience each time: in spring the mountains are covered with lingering snow and alpine plants; summer gives way to lush trees with a cool temperature; autumn sees the mountain covered in a blanket of crimson and gold; winter transforms the landscape into a silvery winter wonderland ripe for skiing and winter sports.
Hikers, take note: the hiking season is open from July to November and relies on the trails being clear of snow for maximum safety on these sometimes hazardous slopes. There are more casual trails for novice hikers but the proper gear is still recommended.
A 25-minute bus ride from Minakami Station on JR Joetsu Line.
