Shiraishi Island is a small, scenic spot in the Seto Inland Sea known for its beauty, which has been praised in Japanese poetry since the Heian period. The island played an important role as a maritime hub during the Edo era. Today, it continues to preserve its rich cultural traditions, with the Shiraishi Dance being its most famous heritage.

This traditional Bon dance is said to have begun as a memorial for those who lost their lives in the 12th-century Battle of Mizushima during the Genpei War. Performed in a large circle to a single song, the dance includes over a dozen variations, with styles for both men and women. It has been recognised as a nationally important intangible folk cultural asset, and in 2022, it was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list as part of the Furyu Dances of Japan.

The Bon Dance takes place over several evenings each summer, with performances at the Shiraishi Community Center and on the island’s beach. The final night also features a lantern floating ceremony, creating a memorable send-off for the spirits of the ancestors.

Please note: from August 13th to 15th, activities are held at the Shiraishi Community Center from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM. On August 16th, the event moves to Shiraishi Island Beach, running from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with a lantern floating ceremony starting at 7:00 PM.
