If there's one scent that signals winter in Japan, it would have to be the bright citrus aroma of yuzu. This yellow fruit has been cultivated for centuries and thrives particularly well in places with clean mountain air and clear river water. Kochi, Tokushima, and Ehime are some of the most famous yuzu regions, but smaller rural towns across Kyushu also grow excellent fruit thanks to their mild climate and rich soil. Miyazaki's Hinokage Town is one of those spots, known for high quality yuzu that balances refreshing acidity with natural sweetness.

This winter, Hinokage growers are bringing the best of their harvest to the avenue in front of the Prefectural Office. Visitors can browse fragrant fresh yuzu and a range of processed products, from juices and vinegars to marmalades and sweets. The event also features a selection of Hinokage specialties, including locally grown veggies and log-grown shiitake mushrooms. It's a nice chance to stock up on mountain delicacies that are usually only found deep in the countryside.

With the winter solstice approaching, the timing of this event feels perfect. In many parts of Japan, people take a yuzu bath on the solstice as a simple way to warm up, boost circulation, and welcome good health for the season ahead. If you plan to try it yourself, this is a great opportunity to pick up fresh yuzu to float in the tub.

The market runs on Wednesday, December 17th from 9am to 4pm and Thursday, December 18th from 9am to 3pm.
