Taizo-in Temple, an 8-minute-walk from JR Hanazono Station (10 minutes by train from JR Kyoto Station), is one of the 46 inner temples of the huge temple complex of Myoshin-ji Zen temple. A great swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645), once stayed here and practiced Zen meditation. Although it’s not a big temple, Taizo-in has five attractive gardens in its precinct. Yoko-en is a colorful garden with many kinds of seasonal flowers. Its beautiful weeping cherry tree is justly famous. The Ying & Yang Gardens are dry gardens of black and white sands, respectively. Hojo-Garden is a simple Zen garden. And Motonobu-no-niwa is an evergreen garden, green throughout the year. It was designed by famous painter, Kano Motonobu (1476-1559).
