Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine, dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken, whose tombs are in Kyoto. After their deaths (in 1912 and 1914), people who wanted to venerate them donated 100,000 trees from all over Japan and overseas to create the forest around the shrine. The shrine was established on November 1, 1920. During the Second World War the shrine was destroyed and rebuilt shortly thereafter. The entrance of the shrine is marked by a massive Torii Gate. Entering the shrine is to immerse yourself into an oasis of peace, and the noises of the city give way to the tranquillity of a forest.
