Wandering around Fushimi Inari

Roaming the forest paths

On my second visit to Kyoto, having already visited a great number of temples, I felt that I needed an escape. This city is so jam packed with temples and national heritage sites that this is a very common occurrence, or so I'm told. Thankfully my relief came in the form of a shrine, the Fushimi Inari. At the entrance courtyard, you are greeted with architecture similar to most other Japanese temples and shrines, but duck around to the back and you're rewarded with a maze of orange torii gate-lined paths meandering up the slopes. A few hundred steps upward gives you remarkable views of Kyoto and the surrounding suburbs.
