Koishikawa Korakuen's Spider Lilies

Autumn flowers abound in Iidabashi's traditional garden

Summer is winding down in Tokyo and the approach of autumn is heralded by a burst of scarlet spider lilies. Also known as higanbana, these delicate flowers bloom around the autumn equinox (o-higan). While many travelers make tracks for the stellar display of spider lilies in neighboring Saitama prefecture, those who prefer to remain in the city will be equally pleased with the higanbana of Koishikawa Korakuen, a traditional Japanese garden near Iidabashi station. The flowers will remain in bloom until early to mid-October. If you visit the garden, you can also catch the dark pink crepe myrtle, a beautiful complement to the summer green of the trees.
